Homemade Sushi... Success!
I can honestly say I'm a huge sushi fan, there's no doubt in my mind I could eat it everyday and not get sick of it. However the cost of it does stop me sometimes. In Toronto/KW area all you can eat sushi roughly is about $15-19 for lunch and $23-35 for dinner. Now over here in Australia (Brisbane/Gold Coast) I have yet to find an all you can eat sushi place. They do however have a bunch of sushi train places but the costs of various dishes does add up to be quite pricey. Let's face it, sushi is to be indulged!
So why not make it yourself? This would totally be a fun first date, definite ice breaker! However in my case my friend Hannah and I were bored so we wanted something fun to do. In all honestly it wasn't as hard we originally thought! So here's what we did :
What we used... Everything can be found at a Woolworths or local grocery store as long as there is an international isle :
Sushi Rice
Nori (seaweed paper)
Smoked Salmon
Cooked Shrimp
Crab
Cucumber
Avocado
Spicy Mayo... obviously had to
Praise/Hellmanns Mayonnaise
Sriracha

Julienne your cucumber and slice the avocado. Then have your smoked/unsmoked salmon cut in slices, your shrimp peeled, and crab sliced.
Wash your sushi rice, three times then cook, and place in freezer to cool down for a few minutes.

Place the Nori on your roller, with plastic wrap on the bottom. Fill with rice, have a bowl of warm water beside you so the rice doesn't stick to you as much. Leave about an inch of extra space. Place your desired sushi ingredients in the middle of the rice.

The inch of free space, add a little water before rolling. Then gently take the closest side (not the inch side) of rice and pull the mat over, squeeze to make sure the insides are tightly together.
Then roll the sushi back and forth, to tighten and keep everything compact. After place on a cutting board and slice off the ends to show a clean and neat sushi roll. Cut into desired thickness and serve! Mix the mayo and sriracha together for yummy and easy spicy mayo.
Sushi that costed about $40 to make, with tons of ingredients left over for another time and tastes just as good! Now to attempt more elaborate rolls... Next time!
Enjoy! xx
